About
Classical guitarist Ben Ellis builds programs around unusual pairings of works, finding unexpected threads that connect contrasting pieces. His programs have included paired transcriptions of violin music by Eugéne Ysaÿe and J.S. Bach as well as the standard “When You Wish Upon A Star” arranged by Chet Atkins paired with an homage to Walt Disney by contemporary composer Darragh O’Neill. Recent performances include recitals at the WCNY Performance Space in Syracuse, The Orangeburg Fine Arts Center in SC, the Niagra Classics Series in Ontario, Canada, and the Tenri Cultural Institute in Manhattan.
Determined to reach new audiences, Ellis also curates special programs that pair music with art, wine, dance, and historical events. He has presented these custom designed events at venues such as the The Smith Opera House in Geneva, NY, Shelter Studios in NYC, and the historic Barnes Mansion in Syracuse, NY. Among his past project, Ellis presented arrangements of rock and roll songs for the classical guitar at The Principle Art Gallery in Charleston, SC. The musical selections highlighted the galleries exhibit of behind the scenes photos of notorious rock musicians.
Ellis’ music-making is driven by a strong commitment to collaboration, working closely with fellow musicians, composers, community organizations, and artists to craft engaging and meaningful performances. He has commissioned new works by Loren Loiacono, Chris Cresswell, Tevi Eber, and Sean Doyle, expanding the repertoire for classical guitar through creative partnerships. As a chamber musician, he performs in collaborative settings that include guitar and violin, guitar and flute, as well guitar duo. As a freelance artist, he has also performed with organizations such as the Syracuse Orchestra, Syracuse Opera, and the New Music Society, further reflecting his dedication to dynamic and community-centered music-making.
In the midst of Ellis’ collaborative projects, he remains a dedicated teacher at his studio, the Westcott Music Collective, and as the guitar instructor at Onondaga Community College. In addition to teaching, Ellis serves as President of the Great Lakes Guitar Society, a Syracuse based non profit organization focused on providing music education and performance opportunities throughout the community.
Ellis holds a master’s degree from Syracuse University and a bachelor’s degree from SUNY Fredonia. He currently resides in Syracuse, NY
